On 10 June 1986, a group of four entrepreneurs opened the doors to a dream in Estômbar, Lagoa. The concept was new, the scale was unprecedented and curiosity was immense. Forty years on, Slide & Splash is not just a water park in Portugal. It is part of the collective memory of entire generations.

The vision that started it all

Slide & Splash was born out of the convergence of four visions and a shared conviction: southern Portugal had an unrivalled asset waiting to be explored.

With over 300 days of sunshine a year and a growing number of tourists, the Algarve was the perfect setting for a water-based leisure concept that did not yet exist in the region.

The idea wasn’t simply to create a park. It was to create a landmark, a space that would bring families and friends together in a safe, dynamic and truly innovative environment.

The western Algarve had nothing quite like it, and the opening of Slide & Splash went on to fill that gap once and for all.

The right choice in the right place

The location in Estômbar, in the municipality of Lagoa, was no accident. Its proximity to Portimão, excellent access to the region’s main road networks and an exceptional climate have made this the perfect location for the project.

More than just a location, it was a strategic choice that placed the park at the perfect crossroads between international tourist flows and Algarve residents, making it accessible – and irresistible – to everyone.

An opening that exceeded all expectations

The public’s response exceeded all initial expectations. Slide & Splash pened with attractions that quickly became icons: Corkscrew, Drops, Big Slides Tower, Jacuzzi, Banzai e River Ride. Each introduced a dimension of fun previously unknown in the region — speed, height and the thrill of hitting the water on a scale that seemed, for the time, truly extraordinary.

Within just a few seasons, the park had already become a must-see stop on the summer itinerary for residents and tourists from across the Iberian Peninsula.

Four decades of continuous development

Whilst the early years were characterised by discovery and achievement, the 1990s saw the company consolidate its position in the Iberian market.

This was followed by decades of investment in diversifying the range of attractions on offer: “Pistas Brandas”, “Kamikase”, areas dedicated to younger children and, more recently, a major upgrade to the facilities, featuring state-of-the-art attractions.

Big Wave (2016) and  Big Fall (2023) are a fine illustration of this evolution: the transition from classic slides to cutting-edge engineering, featuring shared floats, zero-gravity dynamics and highly complex bends.

These are attractions that could be found in any world-class park, and they are right here in Estômbar.

The greatest challenges of the past 40 years

Four decades of history are not without their share of adversity. Slide & Splash has navigated changes in consumer behaviour and the growing demands of environmental sustainability.

It is precisely in this last area that the park stands out. As one of the pioneers in adopting the “Save Water” seal, Slide & Splash has consistently invested in water efficiency, ensuring a balance between recreational activities and the preservation of natural resources – a responsibility the park regards as fundamental to its very structure.

The visitor who grew up with the park

The visitor profile has changed – and how! From a predominantly local and domestic audience in the early years, the park now welcomes visitors from all over the world, a direct reflection of the growing internationalisation of tourism in the Algarve.

But the most significant change is generational. Today, it is common to see second and third generations of the same family at the park — grandparents who brought their children here in the 1980s, children who grew up sliding down the Corkscrew, and grandchildren who are now discovering the same thrills on rides their parents can scarcely imagine.

Slide & Splash has, quite by chance, become a living archive of family memories.

A driving force for the Algarve

The impact of Slide & Splash extends far beyond its premises. Over the course of four decades, the park has contributed directly to job creation, to boosting the local economy of the municipality of Lagoa, and to establishing the Algarve as a leading destination for entertainment tourism.

In a regional tourism offering that relies heavily on sun and beaches, Slide & Splash provides an essential complement: a structured leisure experience that extends the length of stays, builds visitor loyalty and attracts new audiences.

The vision for the next 40 years

The message marking our 40th anniversary is one of deep gratitude to the community, our staff and the millions of visitors who have been part of this journey since 1986.

Looking ahead, our vision is based on three pillars: sustainable growth, continuous innovation and environmental responsibility. It is not just about continuing to grow; it is about growing well, consciously and with purpose, ensuring that the park remains a timeless benchmark in national tourism.

Forty years. Millions of smiles. And the certainty that the next 40 years will be just as rich as the first. Happy anniversary, Slide & Splash.
